  1. How much does a gym membership cost?

Prices for gym memberships vary enormously depending on location and type of service that you are looking for. If staff are on duty at all times or the gym has additional facilities such as a swimming pool you will pay a premium.

  1. Do I have to sign a contract for a year?

It depends on which gym you join. Some gyms ask that you sign a contract for a year. This will commit you but is usually the cheapest way of getting to use the gym. There are some low cost non contract gyms but these will not necessarily be staffed during opening times.

  1. I have never used a gym before and I don’t know what to do.

Most reputable gyms will make sure that you can use the equipment safely and will put you through an induction. Reviews of your programme and any questions that you may have can be answered by a gym instructor.

You don’t have to wear any special exercise kit just comfortable leisurewear and trainers. Just make sure that the kit and trainers are clean. Many running shops offer a service that looks at your foot strike and can recommend the best type of trainer for you.

  1. How do gyms keep exercise equipment clean?

There is a responsibility for gym users to ensure that when they have finished using a piece of gym equipment is it wiped down ready for the next person. Gyms encourage users to follow this practice by providing towels or wipes and disinfectant spray. Staff at the gym will usually follow a cleaning checklist to ensure that the equipment is given a thorough daily clean.

  1. How do I book onto a group exercise class?

There are a number of ways in which you can book onto a class. A lot of gyms allow you to book class slots on line as long as you have a membership number. Others may ask you to phone in to book a class slot but not all classes need to be booked and will welcome customers on a “just turn up” basis. At the start of the class the instructor should check that no one has any injury that would hinder their ability to take part but if you are new to the class it is worth introducing yourself to the instructor before you begin.

  1. Why are some gym memberships not fully inclusive?

Gym memberships are calculated on the assumption that members will use the gym or classes on average a certain number of times a week. Whilst access to the gym and to “just turn up” classes are available to all members all of the time, there may be certain classes or exercise courses that are limited by number and therefore only available to a few members.
